Things to Think About When Buying a Fleece
First up, what do you need a fleece for? Are you in the market for an everyday wearer to see you through the colder months, something for an upcoming hiking trip, a road trip grab-and-go or a mix of all three? The base material, weight, and technical features are good things to keep in mind, but the style, fit, and overall feel are also worth noting. At Passenger, we know that a good fleece is here for the long haul. We want to make sure you make the right choice, so here are some things to mull over:
How do you find escapism? Hiking, bikepacking, coastal walks, long-way-round commutes or pre-dawn surf missions?
Is it responsibly made? We use recycled polyester, Polartec® Power Stretch® and other responsible materials.
What type of fleece is it? Polar fleece, sherpa fleece, microfleece or Polartec?
Is it lightweight? Can it be stuffed in a pack, or is it a super warm / bulkier style?
How does it fit? Over-sized, fitted, short or long?
Does it have a hood? If yes, does it keep out the wind out on the trail?
Does it have pockets? Enough to fit your everyday carries (EDC) and cold hands?
How durable is the fleece material? Will it work for your chosen escapism?
What kind of zip does it have? Full-zip, half, or buttoned?
What Is Fleece?
Fleece is typically made from polyester, mimicking the insulating properties of wool but without the bulk. It’s a synthetic fabric known for its warmth, softness and lightweight feel—all things a roamer needs on and off the trail. It’s highly breathable, moisture-wicking, and quick-drying, which helps regulate body temperature and keeps you comfortable. At Passenger, we opt for recycled polyester - made up of materials that have been used before, usually plastic bottles or fishing nets. A staple of the outdoor space, recycled polyester can be found listed on the labels of the majority of our fleeces.
We also work closely with Polartec®, purveyors of top-notch fleeces and thermal wear within the outdoor space. We’re good buds and hiking partners at this point, with a good few pieces born out of the collab. We’re stoked to have them on our sleeve, treading the line—with perfect balance—between performance needs and stylish design. Pushing the standards of high-quality durable fabrics, built for the roams ahead.
Why Wear Fleece?
Fleece is a staple of the Roamer wardrobe, bridging the gap between outdoor and casual, technical and traditional. Here’s why to wear a fleece:
Warmth. Fleece is renowned for its insulating properties and ability to retain body heat, even in cold weather. The fabric structure traps air, releasing warmth without the bulk.
Comfort. It’s incredibly lightweight and soft against the skin, a great mid-layer or outer-layer depending on the weather.
Versatile. Fleece is a highly versatile material that adapts well to changes in weather and activity. Ideal for hiking, camping, errand running and slow evenings at home.
Easy maintenance. Fleece is easily cared for, it’s machine washable and dries quickly. It’ll also maintain shape and softness with minimal effort—a proper everyday wearer.
Types of Fleece
For fleece days, it’s good to know the difference. We’ve split our range into five types of fleece, plus another seven design choices (hooded, half zip, vest etc). Read up on how they’re Made To Roam, technical features and shop community favourites.

The Different Fleece Designs
It’s worth considering the fleece design / style as well as the base material. Think about when and where you’ll be wearing it - does it need to be packable? Does it need zip pockets? Will it work with other clothes in my winter setup? Here’s a short rundown of the seven main styles:
Full Zip: An easy on/off layer for the trail.
Full Zip Hooded: A little more comfort and wind protection.
Half Zip: Easy layering for every adventure.
Half Zip Hooded: Extra warmth, with a hood for the wind chill.
Hooded: Cosy comfort, hood up or down.
Gilet / Vest: Core warmth, free movement.
- Fleece Shirts: Adventure-ready, shirt-style fleece.
Take-Away Tips For Buying A Fleece
Think about what you have, and the purpose behind buying a new fleece.
Choosing the right size and fit is crucial for long-term comfort.
What is the base material? Sherpa fleece, polar, grid, Polartec etc.
What sort of style suits the roam - are you more comfortable in a half-zip or hooded?
Consider the weather, time of year and average temperatures.
Do you often wear a backpack? If yes, think about breathability, packability and weight.
For hiking and bikepacking, note good breathability and moisture-wicking properties.
Getting the right fit is super important, think about other layers and how you’ll wear the fleece most days.
Has the fleece been made with responsible materials? We use recycled polyester, among others.
Consider adding a Guppy Friend Washing Bag to your basket.
Looking After Your Fleece
To extend the life of your fleece, it’s good to practice regular care. Always read the care label, twice. ‘Spot-clean’ any stains with a damp cloth and dry outside on a hanger where possible. Wash on a low temp—unless advised otherwise—using a natural detergent over synthetic / chemical-based softeners.
When washing anything with polyester in it, be sure to use a Guppy Friend Washing Bag. Pop your fleece inside before sticking it in the washing machine and the bag will catch microfibres and microplastics, preventing them from entering our waterways. The fleece will last longer too.

FAQs
What’s the best type of fleece for layering?
A lightweight fleece is a classic option for adventuring. It’s breathable, warm, and won’t add bulk—perfect under a jacket or over a base layer.
Is fleece waterproof?
Fleece resists water to a point and dries fast, but for wet weather, throw on a waterproof shell to keep yourself properly dry.
How do I pick the right size?
It’s all about what you’re after. For active adventures, a snugger fit works best. For laid-back days, a looser fit might feel right. Check the size guide on our product pages for more info.
How do I keep my fleece feeling soft?
Wash it on a gentle cycle with cold water and avoid fabric softeners. Air dry if you can, or use a low heat in the dryer to keep it feeling fresh.
Are Passenger fleeces made responsibly?
The majority of our fleeces are made with recycled materials like recycled polyester, combining durability with a lighter footprint for the planet.
Can fleece shrink in the wash?
It’s rare, but high heat can do it. Stick to cold washes and air drying, or go with a low heat setting to keep your fleece just right.
How do I get rid of pilling on my fleece?
Use a fabric shaver or a fine comb to smooth things out. Washing inside out and avoiding rough surfaces can also help reduce pilling.
What if my fleece gets wet?
No worries—just hang it up to air dry. Fleece dries fast, so it’ll be ready to keep you warm again in no time.
